Minor Gutter Problems

Most of us know that keeping the gutters on a home clean is important. However, even if you are quite conscientious about keeping your gutters clear, other problems can - and often do - arise. Understanding those problems and knowing what to do about them is an essential part of being a homeowner.

Signs Of Minor Gutter Problems -

Sometimes, minor gutter problems can be repaired with a small bit of tape or some silicone sealant. The most common signs of minor gutter problems include rust on the underside of the gutter, bubbling paint, stains on the bottom sides of the eaves and the presence of rust in general. If you begin to notice these signs, it is imperative to have them remedied immediately. In that case, you could avoid much more serious - and costly - repairs in the future.

Signs Of More Serious Gutter Problems -

It is quite common that many people are not aware of major gutter issues until it is too late. If the home's gutters have been significantly compromised, other more worrisome symptoms may arise. For instance, you may begin to see stains running down the walls inside your home, along with stains around its windows or along its ceilings. All of those signs indicate a potential gutter overflow issue, which must be addressed in a timely manner.

Diagnosing Overflowing Gutters -

In order to confirm that you have a gutter overflow problem, you should climb up on a ladder and lift up one of the roof tiles. This way, you can look inside the eaves to see if any timber rot problems or if there are any leaks. While you're at it, check inside the gutters; scrape away any debris and look for signs of pounding.

What Causes Gutter Overflows?

If you want your gutters repaired properly, it helps to know how they became overflowed in the first place. Sometimes, gutters are simply overloaded and need more drainpipes. This is often the case when a home is remodeled or expanded. Other times, the outside edges of the gutter are higher than those on the inside; this can be fixed by loosening the gutter brackets. Sometimes, simply drilling holes into the gutter in strategic places can alleviate the issue.

The one caveat to all of this advice is that, many times, complete gutter replacement is necessary. Usually, if you start noticing the more serious signs of a gutter problem - including the symptoms of gutter overflow issues - it is smart to have a professional come out and take a look. Doing so can save you a lot of money and grief in the long run.
