The Heart Of Stuttgart
Palace Square is located in the centre of the German city; Stuttgart. Being the symbolic heart of commerce and culture in the city it is also a popular meeting spot for locals and a wonderful sightseeing destination for tourists. The Schlossplatz or Palace Square is a magnificent creation that has signature imposing Baroque architecture; it is also located close to the city’s wonderful shopping district which makes it a perfect place to chill out after a long day of shopping.
Palace Square is surrounded by many buildings dating back to the times of royalty in Germany. Also a magnificent backdrop is created by the nearby Royal Palace which used to be the residence of the king during the 18th and 19th centuries from 1746 to 1806. Today the Royal Palace is the seat of local government of Baden- Wurttemberg which is based in Stuttgart. The New Palace as it is referred to, has a striking resemblance to French palaces, due in part to the wishes of Duke Carl Eugen of Wurttemberg who wanted to create a Versailles in Stuttgart. The signature spire of Palace Square is known as the Konig Wilhelm Jubilee Column and was erected in honour of King Wilhelm’s 25th year of reign in 1841. This monument which celebrates the King’s silver jubilee saw the addition of the statue of Concordia- the Roman goddess of harmony at its pinnacle in 1863. The two fountains in the square were also built during the same time, while the eight cherubs representing the eight rivers of Wurttemberg were added later. Located in the heart of the bus city of Stuttgart the Palace Square is steeped in history and culture, making it an interesting attraction for any visitor. The central location makes it easily accessible from any Stuttgart hotel. Share this guide with : |
